Kentucky Yoga Initiative

Frequency Asked Question

Kentucky Yoga Initiative, wants to know more about your yoga background before you arrive, and thus, all participants must fill out a registration form that’s already there on our website so that we can get brief information about your motivation behind doing Yoga.

Yoga is best for everyone, regardless of age, body, gender, and background, and the only essential factors are an applicant’s openness and willingness to learn. At Kentucky Yoga Initiative, we welcome everyone to learn and deepen their knowledge of Yoga. However, our yoga teacher training programs are rigorous, and we consider a few below points when looking at our applicants to ensure you have a rewarding experience.

  • How long have you been practising
  • Level of interest and dedication
  • Practice Style
  • Yoga Exposure
  • Teaching Motivation
  • Overall health condition

We recommend that you arrive with an established practice and knowledge of the Ashtanga yoga system to optimize your experience with us. While reviewing your application, we look primarily at your level of interest and yoga background.

The Ashtanga Yoga Intermediate Series is a highly demanding and dynamic practice requiring high levels of endurance and determination. Therefore we ask the applicant to have a strong foundation in Primary Series and optimal health before doing Intermediate Series training to ensure that you get the most out of your training and prevent injury or over-exertion.

The more established your practice is before arriving, the deeper the benefits you will reap, the more complete your understanding of adjustments will be, the more enjoyable pranayama will be, and the more rewarding your whole experience.

Program extensions are possible by mutual agreement and depend on room and course availability. You are welcome to stay longer and practice with us if you feel inspired, but remember that your additional stay would be chargeable separately.
Yoga teaches us to be flexible, both in body and mind! Therefore, changes are possible, but please note that a student can transfer from one course to another only once and at least one month before starting that course to attend a different approach instead. If you cannot come, you can send someone to your place or contact us so we can let those waitlisted individuals know.
We are happy for you to join our program without committing to the entire training course. However, Kentucky Yoga Initiative offers yoga classes for a minimum of one week to get the system’s full benefits. So, if you would only like to come for a few days, we recommend trying our drop-in classes to enhance your mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Our yoga teacher training covers the subjects at good depth according to the course length: Practical and theoretical study of Asanas, Pranayama, Meditation, Yoga philosophy, Anatomy and Physiology, Alignment and Adjustment, Safety and modification. Yes, Kentucky Yoga Initiative has the internet available at all of our residences. However, you will spend most of the time at the YogaShala, so it will limit your internet timing to the evening. Nevertheless, you will have enough connections to download emails, browse the web, and call back home on a good day.

We serve two vegetarian meals daily, plus a snack with tea during our afternoon break. Please note that there will be no meals served on your day off. To fully experience the benefits of yoga, we try to keep our stomachs empty for practice times. Therefore, the schedule allows up to two meals to be served during the day. You will find that your body will quickly adjust to the two meals as you will be doing a lot of other energizing practices. No one has ever been left starving! You may like to eat outside occasionally; if so, please let our kitchen know at least one night before the meals are served, as traditional Indian food needs a lot of preparation time. Also, remember that eating out may increase your chances of getting sick.

After your training, we will determine if you qualify to continue as an assistant in our work-for-trade program.

The practice of yoga is a lifelong journey, and there is no such thing as a competition of the self. You are unique, and so are your practice and experience.

Kentucky Yoga Initiative expects our students to be on a different level. However, for your benefit, we suggest you have a foundational knowledge of the Primary Series and an established practice of Yoga, which will ensure you get the best from your experience with us.

Aside from your eagerness to learn, we expect a few things from you when you join the teacher training course. The applicant should understand the primary English language, as the yoga teacher training course is conducted in English. Prior experience or knowledge of yoga is essential for 100-hour and 200-hour yoga teacher training courses and 300-hour and 500-hour courses. The applicant should be in excellent physical condition. It is recommended to come healthy and in relatively good shape! The system demands at least 6 to 8 hours a day. Therefore, we advise students to establish an Ashtanga Vinyasa practice before arriving for the course. 100% attendance at all classes is mandatory. Students must follow the schedule and attend all classes and activities to get the full benefit of the system.

We recommend doing some preparatory reading and practice before you arrive in Kentucky Yoga Initiative for the course. Try to get your body ready for the training by maintaining a 90-minute daily routine of the Primary series for the three months before the period begins. Make a daily practice of your ritual and prepare yourself to get the best out of your journey. To give your mind some exercise, we recommend you to read to get you prepped and inspired.

You are permitted to bring your laptop, cameras, phones, tablets, or other electronics for your stay, but they are not allowed in the yoga halls.
